This Album design is based on the alternative/indie album Surefire by Wilderado, that I have found a lot of enjoyment listening to. In this song there is a consistent drum beat with a piano melody overlaying it. The lyrics in this song are based off of a poem that talks about a bear going out into the forest after hibernation and what this experience is like for it. This song also alludes to having a dream, but not being able to reach it. Knowing this back story, the intention of this album design is to create a contrast between a visual dream and reality. This album highlights the contrast between high and low saturation and smoothness and roughness. The background of the composition is a physical addition of textured paper. The smoothness of the illustration is to communicate the effortlessness of a dream. The circular illustration of the airplane is a dream that the subject is looking towards and aspiring to have, but the reality is he is in a neutral space and cannot access the dream. Instead he is admiring it from a distance.
This album was designed for my typography class, where we were to make our own design for the album Pipe Dreams. Each student designed the song based on their interpretation of the music and information we were provided of the MacEwan Big Band and Jim’s legacy. This Design shows parallel and organic movement, in relation to Jazz.
Green is the comprehensive colour indicating growth. Nature is the best teacher of growth. The “rings of life” within a tree or the evolution of seasons. This album features many styles of music, three of which are: improvisation, classical and cultural. Each style is unique, but they can be combined.
Music brings people together for many different reasons. Nature has its own way of uniting. These each on their own create experiences and life is full of experiences. Jim has openly shared his experience of music with us and his legacy will shape the future of music. Experiences are authentic and a big factor of what forms our life.
This project was up for a competition for the album’s design. This is not the design of the current album.
