vintage pencil sharpener
Vintage Pencil Sharpeners have a very nostalgic feeling for me, between the fun of taking any chance in class to sharpener my pencil in my childhood to watching my father make carpentry in our garage, ensuring his pencil was sharp with the manual sharpener.
This 3-D animation is a representation of a modern pencil sharpener based on a vintage sharpener model. The goal of using this object for this animation was to showcase something vintage and rustic, in an elegant and modern light. These sharpeners were most commonly found in schools and carpentry workshops, along with other locations.
Thinking of the sharpener in these locations leaves me with a nostalgic and calming feeling. Although the environments could be thought of as loud or rough as the pencil is sharpened between the blades, this advertisement animation is a contrast to those sounds and visuals. This animation shows maturity and elegance. The movement of the camera is slow and smooth, to replicate these feelings and elegance. The common three point lighting found throughout is highlighting the metal features and details of the sharpener. The high saturation is an ensemble of a vintage feel and nostalgic feeling of being in a children’s classroom or the memories of being in a shop as a kid.
the channeled melody
What makes up music? What is the discovery of music? How does this all apply to me? These were all questions I asked myself at the beginning of this project. I was motivated to explore a deeper level of motion graphics.
I realized how much line art can represent life. Sometimes, we get distracted by fancy details that make up a piece, but sometimes, it just comes down to the foundation that makes it. Sometimes, we only need the outlines to understand the concept or subject involved. I thoroughly enjoy the details and all the possibilities that detail can hold. However, through my own personal experiences and my attempt to live a simple but enjoyable life, I felt motivated to make a passion piece on an activity I enjoy: music. I wanted it to be simple but effective.
Music is something I’ve always been inspired by and have enjoyed interpreting throughout my life. Music was there for me through the good and the bad, whether I was playing it on my own instruments or listening to it. It has always motivated and inspired me. This title sequence is for a documentary about an individual’s discovery of music and how music has helped them through their life. Although I closely relate to this title sequence through my own musical journey, I was inspired to make this title sequence a representation of music in an abstract. I wanted to make it in a way where each individual can also have their own interpretation. Maybe for some people this interpretation is not related to music, but rather another passion they have in life. What makes them the beautiful human they are and their unique qualities.
I came across an instrumental song a few months ago called Hues. I enjoyed everything about this song, the movement, the moments of silence, the wave and transitions of speed, the rhythms and harmony. It made me comfortable. It made me feel warm inside. At the same time it also felt like a healing song for me. I decided this was the song. I wanted to formulate my design around this song and its movement.
The colour blobs behind each line art illustration are a representation of a highlighter, bringing out the best in each. These colours also relate to the song’s title, “Hues,” and the meaning in which this could be interpreted. When I searched the definition of Hues, the first that came up was: “a color or shade.” As I looked further down, another definition was: “character or aspect.” I liked that this could be interpreted not only as a color, but just a different area.
The bird featured in this title sequence is an abstract line art of a dove. Doves often symbolize hope, peace and love. In this title sequence, I want to represent the documentary’s positive, light and peaceful movement. Yes, every process of something or simply just the process of life, has its ‘down’ moments or its negative moments. However, in the end, we as humans require those tough moments and the negative to appreciate the good. The transition of the dove in the peace is often slower and gliding.
Lastly, this documentary’s title, The Channeled Melody, is key to where music formation is. Channelling usually means digging to a deeper place to receive something. Music creation and writing are usually channelled from someplace, whether based on knowledge, experience, emotion or a story. Each person has a story, experience and interpretation on something. These can all create a melody or a bigger picture, whether it is a variety of complexities or simplicities.
fall time walk series
Through this animation I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of joy not only through the design of vibrant colors, illustration and the facial expression of the character but also through the way the character moves. By using the anticipation animation principle, theindividual has a bounce and a “pep in his step”, causing each leg to have a slight hesitation before taking the next step. An element of exaggeration in the secondary actions of his hat bouncing and the bread popping out of the paper grocery bag, in response to his skip and bounce in his steps. By including these principles, I wanted it to encapsulate a light and delightful feeling as the character walks through the colors of fall leaves. Leaves crunching with every step and the wind through the trees helps the viewer feel included in the scene and location of the character.
